Every fall, we line Greatist’s pantries with can after can of pumpkin purée in the hopes of creating the season’s perfect pie. It’s a noble goal, to be sure, but there are endless ways to use canned pumpkin, from the fairly common (like risotto or pasta) to the less expected (or downright weird).
Canned pumpkin is a surprisingly versatile product packed with vitamins A, C, K, and fiber, so we thought it best to spread the word: pumpkin makes almost anything delicious. Here’s a list of the
more unconventional ways to use up pumpkin purée so that your cans are never wasted — eat up!

Unreal Eats is Healthy Living's original video series, where we go behind calorie counts and health claims to examine what's really in the processed foods that scream loudest in our food environment.
Trick or Treat might be a traditionally youth-oriented activity, but the grown-ups are sharing in the haul -- about half of adults will eat candy on Halloween, according to data from the NPD group, as reported by USA Today. In fact, Oct. 31 makes up 4 percent of candy consumption for the entire year.

Just as perfect for Thanksgiving as it is for a quick weekend night, you can, and should, make this one day ahead. That extra day really lets the flavors meld.
Ingredients:
- 1 Cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 Large shallots, chopped
- 1 1/2 Pounds crimini mushrooms
- 1/2 Cup dry Marsala or Maderia Wine, divided
- 1 Teaspoon chopped fresh thyme, plus fresh whole sprigs for garnish
- Coarse salt and freshly-ground pepper
- Instructions:
1. In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, bring cream and shallots to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir in mushrooms and 1/4 cup Marsala, lower heat to medium and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are evenly coated. Stir in additional 1/4 cup Marsala and simmer for about 6 minutes, until the sauce is thickened and the mushrooms are tender. Add chopped thyme and continue simmering for 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve with fresh thyme sprigs as garnish.

You know how the long-ago witch hunts were stupid and hateful? What a relief those days are over.
Except they’re not. In many countries, people are still killed on suspicion of witchcraft. United Nations experts cautioned in 2009 that murders of women and children accused of sorcery were on the rise. Following are just a few of many examples from around the world.

Despite the concerns many people have about vegan living being complicated and foreign, it’s actually a lot more simple and familiar than most would think. Even if you’re used to relying on certain ingredients such as meat, cheese and eggs, there’s no reason that ditching animal products should be a big deal.

We devote plenty of time and energy into spring cleaning our homes, but what about our bodies? As you rid your home of clutter and dust this year, consider cleansing your body of toxins, too. Everyday we encounter high levels of chemicals—from the food we eat to the personal care products we use each morning. Our bodies remove these chemicals through its natural waste system, but because we live in such a chemical-laden world, this system can get bogged down.

Plants do not seem to want to live in my house. After my last plant turned completely brown, I decided to give up on growing anything indoors for awhile. Recently, I was inspired to give it another try after I heard Kamal Meattle talk about his experience. Kamal had asthma so badly that doctors predicted he could die if his living environment didn’t change. Then, by simply adding plants in his home and workspace, his health drastically improved and his asthma symptoms subsided (you can listen to his Ted Talks presentation here).
Not only do plants provide a nice aesthetic quality in the home, they can have actual benefits on health. Many plants filter toxins like formaldehyde, xylene and toluene, which can seep into the home from building materials and paint. Beyond cleaning the air, plants can reduce stress and symptoms of depression.

What are you going to be for Halloween? A witch, a goblin or a ghost? Or something altogether different and original such as the government shutdown, 50 Shades of Grey or a cereal killer?
What about your pet? Do you plan on dressing him or her up as well? I have seen some pretty cute pet costumes such as hot dogs for doggies and a bird for a cat. But, I admittedly have mixed feelings about dressing up our furry friends in frills, hats, horns, wings and wigs. Especially wigs.

At a recent Gardenista editorial meeting, a discussion about plants in the bedroom revealed two diametrically opposed camps: love them or hate them. Photosynthesis creates the love as the process adds oxygen and purifies the air (which is why Gardenista editor Michelle has plants in every room).
But… because plants require light to photosynthesize, at night the process apparently reverses and may cause plants to respire as humans do, emitting the dreaded carbon dioxide (this is the part that Remodelista editor Sarah finds creepy).
After a long discussion, we have decided that having plants in your bedroom comes down to personal preference. What’s yours? If you’re plant inclined, here are a few images for inspiration.

With his characteristic wit and humble charm, the artist André Dubreuil has devoted decades to breathing life back into his family’s grand 18th-century chateau.
As the son of two scientists, it would seem natural that André Dubreuil would one day follow in his parents’ footsteps and carve a successful career for himself in the fields of research and medicine. After all, that’s what five of his six siblings did.
But from an early age, the 62-year-old French furniture designer was more interested in aesthetics than in science. He wanted to create beautiful worlds to inhabit, because, as he puts it, “when I am surrounded by beauty, whether it’s in nature or with objects, that’s when I am at my happiest.”
In 1996, when the time finally came for Pierre and Denise Dubreuil to pass on their country home in France’s Dordogne region to one of their children, André was the obvious choice. Even as a teenager, he was always helping with the Château de Beaulieu’s restoration — in fact the pink flowered fabric wallpaper he picked out for his parents’ bedroom in the 1960s still remains there today.

Nothing tops off a Halloween costume quite like a pair of glowing eyes, cat eyes, or devil eyes, but if you’re not careful, you could end starring in your own personal horror story. Hollywood and Broadway make good use of decorative contact lenses, but you might want to think twice before wearing them and you definitely shouldn’t let your kids wear them.
Plopping the wrong contact lenses into your eyes just for the fun of it just may jeopardize your eye health in a big way. As tempting as it may be, you should NEVER buy contact lenses without a prescription and NEVER borrow them from someone else.

Australia is a BIG island, and it’s a long way between Murrumbateman, Canberra (where Clonakilla vineyards are located) and Frankland River, Western Australia (another budding cool-climate shiraz region) or 3685km to be exact.
It’s a long drive, but you could stop off along the way in the Barossa Valley (world renown for full-bodied-blooded shiraz) and the Adelaide Hills (you’d have to call in at Shaw & Smith in the who make seriously good, cool-climate elegant shiraz), about 1121km from Canberra. You can be assured you will experience all four seasons along the way, and yet most people perceive Australia as warm (hot) and sunny everywhere, all the time.

The site is on the edge of the grounds to Burton Constable Hall and is split into several areas. To enter the site you pass through the entrance arch and gate lodge to the hall – the reception is located in the gate lodge.
We were told to drive through the site to the lakeside bar and we would be met by a warden who would show us where to pitch. The main site is static caravans, which looked fantastic and all were well kept with some stunning little gardens and raised decks. You pass through these to reach the touring caravan area which overlooks a big fishing lake with the hall just visible through the trees in the distance.

A while back, I received an email from a reader named Emily who said she uses the blog to stay in touch with her friend after she moved to Chicago, Illinois, and her friend stayed behind in Orlando, Florida. They browse through the blog, picking out recipes they want to try, and then compare notes.
She said they were talking about how delicious tom yum (Thai hot and sour soup) was and "immediately" searched the blog for a recipe. (I liked how she actually searched for the recipe before emailing me. Ha!)

The identification guides that I have show that Lesser Whistling Ducks may also have contrasting feathers on their flanks, indeed the “plumes” became more or less obvious as the birds preened. As I understand it Wandering WD has a rare status in Singapore so I would be interested to know from anyone else more familiar with them.
The sun had already got his hat on by the time I left the hotel at 06.00. I was heading to South Platte Park and stepped from the RTD light railway at Littlewoood/Mineral just before 07.00. A bridge took me across the line and into a Park ‘n Ride car park.

Our Shanghai correspondent, Mick Knuppel, resurfaces and reports on the TarraWarra Estate Pinot Noir Australasia Duck Run
Well, well, the Shanghai branch of the Three Nations Duck Run saw in the New Year with style. Teaming up with Simon Napthine from Tarrawarra wines in Melbourne’s Yarra Valley, and Mr Wandering Palate himself in Singapore, as part of our agreed New Year ambitious project to create the dish in three worlds, my version adhered to strict instructions.
Chinese ducks bought, intact despite my cleaver-wielding purveyor threatening some Tony Montana-like destruction upon them. Tick. The freshest Pineapple one can find. Tick. Organic coconut milk, Bok Choy, Chinese Broccoli and kaffir lime leaves. Further ticks.

Ducks can be charming companions in suburban backyards.
As someone who never raised so much as a parakeet on her own, the idea that I could look out the window and watch our five full-grown, food-producing, bug-eating, fertilizer-creating waterfowl would have been pure fantasy only two years ago. Actually, it was a fantasy—a dream of my young daughter’s and mine when we moved to comparatively yard-rich Westchester County, New York from the land of tiny lawns, Westside Los Angeles. Like many urban and suburban families,
we saw the cute pictures of folks with their A-frame coops and their adorable hens and said, "That’s what we want!" My husband thought we were flat-out nuts but he loves fresh food and so humored us when we presented my latest eat-local scheme. (I mean, eat really local scheme.) Then, on our way to chicken ownership, we fell in love with another species altogether.

I eeked out one more dish from my roast duck by boiling the carcass and making chao hot vit bac/bach thao (Vietnamese rice porridge with preserved/century/thousand duck egg). I know, I know, this is a Chinese dish too. :P (Any of my readers know if the bac refers to the north ie. Chinese-style? I know that bach is for century and thao refers to herb, or preservation method.)
