Why Breakfast is the ‘Most Important Meal of the Day’
We’ve all heard it many times, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” While the saying may have been shared so many times it’s now cliché, that doesn’t make it any less true. A healthy breakfast has been shown to prime the metabolism for fat burning throughout the day. Starting your day off with the right kind of foods can also give you enough energy to face whatever the day may bring.
A recent study adds another benefit for breakfast eaters. Scientists have shown that men who do not eat breakfast are at a greater risk for heart problems. The study found that those who skipped breakfast were 27 percent more likely to have heart problems than those who started their day with a healthy meal. Though the study was limited to men over the age of 45, the recommendation from those conducting the study was to eat a healthy breakfast within an hour of waking up each day.
The key word here is healthy. Breakfast won’t do you much good if you only eat things like sugary cereals, toaster pastries or whatever you can get from the nearest fast food restaurant. Try one of these suggestions for your next first meal of the day.
Eggs
Eggs are a great food to start your day off with. Egg whites alone contain 4 grams of protein each and no added fat. Combine them with fresh vegetables for a healthy, nutritious omelette that takes next to no time to prepare. If you’re looking for something a little heartier, try baking your eggs in avocado halves. They can be cooked to your doneness preference, and will start your day nutritiously.
Smoothies
Some people don’t want to or don’t like to eat a full meal first thing in the morning. If that’s the case, try making a smoothie out of fresh produce. We love the idea of a rainbow smoothie, which can provide as much as seven servings of fruits and vegetables. Pick a favorite fruit or vegetable to represent each color of the rainbow, add some Greek yogurt for creaminess and protein, and you’re good to go!
Pancakes
There are few better ways to begin the day than with homemade pancakes. You can always go the traditional route, but if you want to add extra nutrition and flavor, we recommend our vegan carrot cake pancakes. They look too good to be a healthy dessert, let alone a healthy breakfast, but they pack a nutritional punch. The pancakes contain no added sugar, instead getting their sweetness naturally from the carrots, coconut milk and pineapple used to make them. While they take a little longer to prepare than some other breakfast options, we think they make a great weekend treat.
