This may be my favorite black-and-white image in our collection. It was taken by Clifton Adams as a part of a story in the March 1928 issue of National Geographic magazine titled “The Great Falls of the Potomac.”
At first it appears to be a simple shot of a forest. The sunlight is filtered through the woods, lighting some leaves and parts of the forest floor. The deep dark of the woods brings an almost magical feel to the photograph.
Then your eye finds the young girl in the lower left quadrant. She seems to be caught in the dappled sunshine. Suddenly this natural history image becomes a real life Maxfield Parish painting of sorts. I also love that it was taken on Plummers Island in the Potomac River, a place I pass by several times each week.
This photo proves that you don’t have to travel the world to capture an incredible photograph. You just have to open your eyes.
